Unless you’ve been living under an Internet rock, you’ve probably heard the buzz about Niche Marketing. Right now it’s the hottest marketing topic online.

Is it a new concept?

Well on the Internet maybe, but if like me, you’ve been involved in direct response marketing in the ‘Bricks and Mortar’ world then it isn’t – that’s the way we’ve done things since time immemorial.

So what’s this Niche Marketing thing all about?

If you have ever taken Marketing 101 then you’ll have heard of the old marketing adage : “Find a need and fill it” – that’s what “Niche Marketing” is all about. Finding a “focussed” group of people, with a specialized interest, eager to buy (The Niche) and promoting a suitable product or service to all those interested in buying it (Marketing).

Let me give you a few examples of these Niches :

	Recipes
Golf
Fishing
Health and Fitness
Travel
Collectibles
Dating
Dog Training
Satellite TV
Beauty Tips
Astrology
Cats
Bartending
Alternative Health
Hand-poured Candles
Gourmet Foods
Gambling
Mortgages
Credit Cards
Music
Jewellery

…… the list just goes on and on and these are just the main headings, there are niches within each of these niches … Think of a subject and there’s likely a niche market for it…

But the name of the game is to find a “tightly focussed” niche. The reason for this that if you target a general market the competition is fierce and it’s hard, if not impossible, for the little guy to get a foothold.

When you narrow down the size of the market you eradicate most of the heavy hitters with bottomless advertising budgets, because these guys aren’t interested in making a few thousand bucks a year from these tiny specialized markets, they’re after millions from mass markets…

… And let’s face it if you’re a little guy you simply can’t be everything to everybody, so you must pick a specific focus (Niche) for your business. For example don’t target “Fishing”, instead target “Fishing Baits” or “Fishing Lures” both of which have a much more specific focus…

…Get the idea?

Once you narrow down the size of the market you have an automatic advantage over larger companies. Here’s why :

You can quickly become an expert in your niche (if you’re not already)
It’s easier to keep current with a narrowly focussed market niche
You can respond faster to changes in the market
You can build close relationships with key customers that will be hard to compete with

This is something I learned from experience – if you’re interested you can read my story here andre-anthony-value-of-niche-marketing.htm.

By now you’re probably wondering about the mechanics of this niche marketing stuff. In a nutshell here’s how it works :

Find and research profitable niche markets
Locate or develop suitable products/services to market
Set up a web site to market the products/services
Establish a marketing system that works for you
Repeat the process over and over again with a different niche each time.

Imagine having a niche site producing one sale a day at say $20. That’s $7300 a year – how many sites could you set up and run 10, 20 ….?

But before you get too excited, I have a word of caution for you:

Niche marketing is not a magic bullet. It isn’t a matter of putting up a web site and then sitting back and waiting for the money to roll in – “build it and they will come” may have worked for Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, but it doesn’t work that way on the Internet – if you do that you’ll be waiting a long time.

If you want a successful niche business, you have to work at it just like any other business – if you’re prepared to put in the effort though the rewards can be significant.

How to Find a Niche
by: Andrew Hansen

Ok so you know you need to find a niche market, but how on earth do you do that? With so many niches out there, where do you start?

Ok firstly your going to need to go to your computer and open two windows:

1.	Google.com

2.	inventory.overture.com

What we are looking for and what we really mean by a niche market is a market that has a relatively low number of pages already listed in the search engines. This figure represents supply or ‘competition’ for this niche. What we also need a niche to have in order for us to be able to profit from it is a relatively high number of ‘demand’ or people already searching for this niche.

As in basic economics a high demand and low supply creates value. So, if we can find a niche (meaning a keyword) with these qualities then we stand to profit from it.

To find this information you can look to Google to find the results pages and Overture Keyword Selector to find the number of searches the word has per month.

Ok, so how do we know what is high demand and low supply? Great question! Once you start to have a look around you will get a feel for what is a lot of searches and what is a low number of results pages.

Different people have different definitions in terms of numbers of what is a niche market and what isn’t. Generally if you can find a word that has over 10 000 searches per month and 2 million or less results pages in Google. You will have a pretty solid Niche.

To give you an idea to get you started here’s an example:

Software: 732 075 searches : 5 500 000 000 results pages

This is a BIG market… High search volume and High competition

Internet Marketing Online: 16 000 searches : 358 000 000 results pages

This is a COMPETITIVE market… Low search volume relative to competition

Pug Dog: 10 000 searches : 5 000 000 results pages

This is a NICHE Market… High search volume relative to competition.

I hope you can see now what I mean by Niche Market…

A 4-Step System for Uncovering Hot Niche Markets
by: James Allen

Whether you are an affiliate marketer, a website designer or you make your living creating and marketing infoproducts such as ebooks, discovering profitable niche markets to exploit is probably at the top of your “to-do” list. The following is a four-step system you can apply anytime you need to find a new niche audience to target and profit from.

1. Initial Brainstorming

This first step is best approached with a very open mind and a notebook and pen handy. The idea is to seek topics that are outside your current realm of knowledge. One of the best ways to do this is by reading blogs.

Bloggers come from every walk of life, and you will find blogs with information on almost any niche topic imaginable. Best of all, bloggers provide fresh, timely information.

Start spending some time reading some random blogs. A good starting place would be at blog directories such as Blogdex – http://www.blogdex.net . As you are reading, you’ll discover many different topics being discussed. Many of these you may have never heard of before. Start writing these down.

Example: You found yourself reading a blog post that described the blogger’s recent experience at a demolition derby. Maybe you don’t know much yourself about this niche, so you add “demolition derby” to your list.

2. Keyword Research

Once you have a list of several possible niches, the next step is to find out what keywords and keyword phrases people are using to search for this and related information via the major search engines. Good Keywords -http://www.goodkeywords.com for example, is a free Windows software you can download that will help you do just this. With this program, you can type-in a topic from your list and the software will begin to uncover many related keyword phrases being actively searched for.

It takes time to get the hang of this software, but once you master it you will be able to generate large and valuable keyword lists. After you uncover at least a few dozen related keyword phrases, save your list and move onto the next step. If you are not able to uncover many related keyword phrases, chances are there is not much potential here and you should start over with another topic from step one.

Example: Using Good Keywords or a similar tool, you enter the term “demolition derby”. You soon have a large list of related keyword phrases people have been using to search for information on this topic, such as “demolition derby video” and “demolition derby car for sale”.

3. Secondary Idea Creation

Read through the keyword list you generated. Some of your keyword phrases are going to give you ideas for other target audiences you may want to explore in the future. Take some time now to write these new ideas down while they are still fresh in your mind. Save this information for later reference. You can never have enough fresh ideas to explore when trying to uncover under-exploited niche markets.

Example: One of the keyword phrases in your “demolition derby” list was “demolition derby game online” – you note that later you should explore what other types of online games people are searching for.

4. Niche Potential Analysis

If you used Good Keywords to mine for keyword phrases, you will have also been provided with an approximate number of times each of these terms was searched for during the past month. The next thing you need to do is compare this number, representing potential search engine traffic, with the number of websites already catering directly to these searches.

To do this, start by taking your keyword phrases and do an exact phrases search on each of them at Google, making certain to surround your keyword phrase in quotes. Write down the number of results google brings back for your search. Next, compare the number of monthly searches for each phrase to the number of Google results.

If you are lucky, you will discover that some of your keyword phrases with good monthly traffic don’t have many results in the search engines yet. If you find that you have uncovered a niche that has several keyword phrases with a high number of monthly searches and at least a few of them have a low number of results in Google, chances are you have found a very good niche to exploit with your next online project. If not, go back to the list you created in step one and repeat the process.

Example: You discover that the phrase “demolition derby car for sale” is searched for around 700 times monthly, but brings back only 486 results in Google and the term “demoliton derby pic” receives several hundred searches a month but only returns 258 results in Google. You are very happy to have discovered a potentially hot niche with good under-exploited keyword phrases to target.

Although there are several costly and difficult to master programs available that can help you discover unique target markets, the system above has proven to be an effective free method for uncovering niches to profit from. Apply it today and be on your way to niche marketing success.

Another valuable, and free, tool available for researching a profitable niche is Amazon.

AMAZON

At Amazon there is a tons of information for the researcher. You can use Amazon to check out how the books in your niche areas are performing. There is few tips to help you determine the viability of a niche for an e-Book, printed book, or even both.

Tips include:

- Read the reviews of the most selling books in your niche (Amazon Rank of 1 is the most selling and a rank of 5,000,000 hardly ever sells). The people who review the books often provide excellent information on how to make book better, which you may be able to incorporate into your book.

- Buying the books that receive positive reviews and sell well. This method will give you a good feel for the quality of your competition.

- You can use the ‘Search Inside This Book’- tool when available to see how many pages and what is the quality of the information that is provided. If the niche book title is Make Money On EBay, it is quite interesting to see how much of the book is dedicated to making money on EBay. The book may include third of the book on ‘how to start a business’ with the same info that’s explained in hundreds of books already. If all books only dedicate a small amount of the content on exactly how to make money on EBay, then maybe there is a market for a highly targeted guide on this topic. I was checking out for a niche topic for a report and decided to buy a book on the topic, but you know what? There wasn’t any books that went into any detail on how to find a niche topic. There are e-Books with a page of good info here and there, but not one complete e-Book. So, I found my niche because I knew from looking at internet marketing discussion groups that there is lot of people who are looking for help on this exact topic. Demand with no supply = my report.

- Use the Amazon search feature to determine how much competition there is, what is the quality of the competition, and what is the demand for your product.

– Competition:

— How many books on same subject are being sold ?

— How many books been written in the past year?

— Does few years old quality books still selling well?

— How many pages are the books? If all the best selling books on your topic consist of 200+ pages and you can only create an 80 page book, then maybe there is some another niche that suits better for you.

– Quality of Competition:

— Do the titles and subtitles include lots of appropriate keywords?

— Are the writers considered experts in their fields?

— Are there lots of books rated high, which will make it hard to break into, or is there a demand for a quality book on the your topic?

– Demand:

— If there is at least two or three books with an Amazon Rank of less than 5,000 then there is likely good demand. You can visit http://www.fonerbooks.com/surfing.htm for info on how to understand the Amazon Rank and what volumes correlate to Rank.

When searching for new niches to exploit, there are certain characteristics any marketer must look for if they are looking to make a serious amount of dollars.

The Internet is absolutely saturated by niches, and the vast majority of these lie waiting for a marketer to come along and exploit it, for cash, and for a very long time. The trick for any marketer is to find these niches, and be able to quickly identify whether its lucrative niche, or just one that will not reward all the effort to dominate the search engine results.

It is easy enough to find new niches on the internet, even today when so many marketers have been online for a while. So for any new marketer, it is still easily possible to get started and enjoy the same success as the marketers that are creating today’s quality marketing products. The key though is to find those niches where searchers are willing to spend some cash to get the answer to their search term.

So what does this mean? Well, put it this way. Imagine two search terms with the same level of monthly searches, competing websites, and it is as easy or as difficult to rank well in the Search Engines for them. The first search term is “How to fix a leaking faucet” and the second is “How to fix a golf slice” – can you tell which one would be the profitable niche?

The most obvious response to these two niches – leaking faucets and golf problems – is that someone looking to fix a leaking faucet is not likely to part with any cash to find out how to do it, but a golfer who is desperate to fix a slice in their golf game is likely, if all other factors are there, purchase something which they believe will help remedy that issue.

The key to identifying profitable niches is identifying niches where the people searching are likely to open their wallets and spend some cash once they find what they’re searching for.

If you’ve studied online marketing for any amount of time, you know the frustration involved in finding a great niche market to promote. I’ve noticed all the gurus can tell you everything you need to know, except what to sell. It makes sense I guess, if they told you the best niches then they’d have to kill you. Well, I’m no guru, but I can give you some tips to help narrow down the sea of possibilities to a manageable amount. First, a couple of thoughts to keep in mind: Think about taking a large piece of a small pie. At least starting out. Once you’ve mastered a few small markets then you can try to rank #1 for “Los Angeles DWI Attorney”. (That’s a joke, by the way!) Next, think about being a Specialist as opposed to a Generalist. Consider doctors for example. Which makes the most money, the Specialists or the Generalists? Aim to be the brain surgeon for your niche and you’ll have a leg up on the comp. So, here we go:

1. Find a niche with a good selection of merchants. Translation: don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Merchants can halt affiliate programs whenever it’s convenient for them and they usually don’t get your permission first. It’s alot easier to switch a campaign to another merchant or network than to start a new campaign from scratch.

2. Try to find niches where it’s clearly advantageous to purchase online. Most people prefer Instant Gratification, so find products (ebooks, audios, etc) or services (file sharing sites, meeting software, etc.) where the buyers can have immediate access. Don’t try to sell log splitters online (trust me).

3. In line with #2 above, market things that are only available online. You can’t get free shipping for an online backup service. And that’s a good thing. Remember, IG!

4. Look for a niche that has lead/trial offers. It just makes sense that people are more willing to try a product for free, or give an email address, rather than give you their credit card number. You should expect conversion rates for leads and trials to be around twice that of regular purchases. More conversions, more cabbage!

5. Find products or services that save people money, or even make them money. People historically are willing to pay more for something if they think it will save them money over time. And don’t forget, time is money, so emphasize that with your ad copy. This characteristic is the foundation of the “make money online” gurus, right?

So , there’s five good ways to filter your niche ideas to give you a better chance at finding a profitable niche from the get-go. Try quantifying your niche by giving it 1 point for each of the 5 characteristics. If your niche scores a 4 or 5, then chances are you can make it work, with the right ad copy and landing pages. If you’d like to find some potential lead/trial niches, go to Commission Junction (cj.com) and click Get Links –> Advertiser List and type “lead” in the search box, then click on the Lead column header to sort the payouts from highest to lowest. But wait!, this works for individual categories also. And in case you’re wondering, it’s pronounced “nitch” west of the Mississippi and “neesh” on the east side. Happy nitching.

To Make Money Online You Need to Target Human Desires

Targeting lucrative niches that have not had every last cent sucked out of them is not only difficult but also very time consuming. Many an online entrepreneur has wasted a considerable amount of time targeting a niche that originally looked to be a good bet with seemingly strong demand and so on, only to find out after lots of networking and marketing that it was really a non-starter from the beginning.

So it is of vital importance to really understand the most important human needs before investing time & resources in a niche that may not prove to be that profitable. If you are targeting things that you think will sell, when they are actually things that people couldn’t really be bothered with, your internet endeavors will be still born.

On the other hand if you are providing services & products that hit the human needs’ sweet spot, you will be onto a good money maker.

So What Do People Want In Their Lives?

Well there are really only 3 things that people strive for and only a few get to achieve all three of them.

They are;

1. Time

2. Money

3. Health

In other words everyone is trying to spend less time making as much money as possible whilst maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Many people achieve the first 2 but let the third one suffer – just look at how many high powered wealthy executives have bad hearts and really look out of shape. Also a lot of really healthy people, such as personal trainers or professional athletes, have their health but maybe not so much of the wealth – except for the Michael Johnsons & Lance Armstrongs of this world.

So achieving all three of these needs is a difficult act to achieve, but as internet marketer you should be trying to attend to these needs with your products and services.

Target the Greatest Desires That People Have

Finding profitable niches should therefore include targeting everyone’s desires & needs and be specific enough to hit your prospect’s sweet spot.

If you can get this strategy right and do it often enough, you could be onto a real money maker. Targeting Needs and Niches. Identifying people’s needs is one thing but it might be too broad to be viable in terms of a money making strategy.

It is therefore useful to narrow things down a bit into smaller niches and once you have found a profitable niche that has a strong demand and that is less exploited than the common ones, you will really be onto a winner.

PS.

Ensure that your online earnings are maximized by working in the right niche by reading this (free) report on Finding Profitable Niches here.

If you’ve studied online marketing for any amount of time, you know the frustration involved in finding a great niche market to promote.

They are;

1. Time

2. Money

They are;

1. Time

2. Money
